Nursing care plans for patient with mesothelioma cancer

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body’s internal organs including the lungs (called pleura mesothelioma/ lung mesothelioma), heart (called pericardium mesothelioma) and abdominal (called peritoneal mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, which originate in the serosal lining of the pleural cavity, account for less than 10% of all cancer-related deaths. Mesothelioma have a latency period ranging from 20 to 45 years from exposure to tumor discovery, usually occur in people older than age 50, and are invariably fatal

Mesothelioma Causes
Risk factor mesothelioma tumor and asbestos exposure is well established.
Predisposition factor for mesothelioma

  • Chronic inflammation,
  • Radiation
  • Recurrent lung infection.
  • Smoking alone doesn't increase the risk for developing a mesothelioma
  • Asbestos exposure increases risk for mesothelioma about 50%.



Complications for mesothelioma
Disease progression and metastasis can lead to severe dyspnea, infection, and complications of immobility, such as skin breakdown.

Nursing Assessment Nursing care plans  for mesothelioma

  • Patient's history Of asbestos exposure
  • Patient complaints chest pain and dyspnea. Cough Hoarseness, Anorexia, Weight loss, Weakness and fatigue.
  • Vital signs may reflect an elevated temperature.
  • Inspection: shortness of breath and, finger clubbing.
  • Auscultation.: diminished chest sounds
  • Percussion dullness over lung fields


Diagnostic test for mesothelioma

  • Pleural biopsy
  • Then histologic study of the specimen..
  • Chest x-rays
  • Computed tomography scan of the chest


Treatment of Mesothelioma
Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and a combination of treatments are usually tried, but they seldom control the disease in most patients.

  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Excess fluid volume
  • Fatigue
  • Hopelessness
  • Impaired gas exchange
  • Impaired physical mobility
  • Impaired skin integrity
  • Ineffective airway clearance
  • Ineffective breathing pattern
  • Risk for infection


Nursing outcomes mesothelioma patient
Patient Will:

  • Express feelings of comfort and decreased of pain.
  • Feels less anxious.
  • The patient's fluid volume will remain within normal range.
  • Carry out ADL without weakness or fatigue.
  • Begin to make decisions on his own behalf.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation.
  • Maintain muscle strength and joint range of motion.
  • The patient's skin will remain intact.
  • Maintain a patent airway.
  • Respiratory rate will remain normal.
  • No signs or symptoms of infection.
